About the Community Apple Orchard

Picture
Prior to 2010, the apple orchard at the corner of Pierceton and Packerton Roads in Winona Lake, Indiana was abandoned.  The Orchard Restoration Project was started in 2010 when Community Apple Orchard Corporation arranged a loan with Grace College to fund the clean up and reestablishment of this great community resource. Since that time, The Orchard has harvested over 40,000 pounds of apples, many of which have been donated to local food banks.

The Orchard has 14 different varieties of trees, including:

  • Red Delicious
  • Golden Delicious
  • Rome
  • Transparent
  • Granny Smith
  • Jonathan
  • Gala
  • Honey Crisp
  • Macintosh
  • Jonagold (or something like it)

All apples are organic and can be picked and bought during the fall harvest season for $0.25/lb. Or community members can "adopt" a tree share for $10 a year! Adopt a tree today!

The Orchard also has blueberry bushes (available only to orchard volunteers), plus we sell organic raw honey!

Why do we care about being a completely organic orchard? Studies from the US Environmental Protection Agency show that pesticides pollute drinking water for nearly 50% of all Americans - but organic farming is the best solution to this problem! Our trees are sprayed with only natural garlic based spray and never with harmful chemicals.  Eating organic foods has also been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, and some studies show that organic foods even have higher levels of nutrients than conventionally grown foods! Plus, organic apples just taste great!
